THL has changed over the past 9 years, but we are still here working to provide unbiased, meaningful comparative reviews of the audio gear that reproduces our favorite tunes. Our very own Deezel has retired from reviews and we greatly appreciate all of his reviews over the past 5 years and hope you have enjoyed them as well. He will be missed.
But, when one door closes, another opens. The door opened and I would like to officially introduce you to our newest reviewer: Guy Lerner. Guy grew up in a house full of music where he was spinning his dad’s Abba LPs on their Akai turntable and has been smitten by how music has made him feel ever since. In his teen years, he discovered portable audio via a yellow Walkman with countless hours spent listening to Def Leppard.
His beginnings in reviewing are an extension of his professional career as a writer and photographer, which translated to writing and photographing headphones he bought years prior. As is the same with many of us that jump down the rabbit hole of audio, he was looking for a better way to listen to music with headphones, and the excitement grew as he explored the relationship between music and the gear that recreates it.
Expanding on this, Guy’s take on gear vs. music is quote-worthy:
“I’ve always debated with myself (and anyone else who’d listen) whether this hobby is all about the music or all about the gear. I’ve met countless people who either listen to music because that’s what they love, regardless of what they listen with, and countless others who only listen to music as a means to an end, because their real passion is audio gear.
“Personally, I love the music and the gear in equal measure. Great gear unquestionably makes the music I enjoy even more enjoyable, and great music brings out the best in the gear I enjoy using. But I don’t need one to enjoy the other. Each of us will have different degrees of enthusiasm for the music and the gear, and like everything else in the hobby, there’s no right or wrong, only what you enjoy (and more practically, can afford).”
As a reviewer, he is looking to share his experiences openly and honestly, and in doing so, get to personally experience some of the incredible gear we’re all lucky enough to enjoy today. In his lifetime he has seen firsthand the evolution of AM radio to FM, vinyl to CD, analog to digital, and MP3 to hi-res streaming and believes we are in the golden age of head-fi gear. He is as passionate as anyone to see just how far we can go, and what tomorrow will bring, just like I am sure you are!
