Rating Breakdown
All ratings are scaled to how the particular IEM peforms compared to the best set I’ve heard to date in a particular category.

Accessories: Depends on both quantity and quality of the accessories, as well as on how well-suited they are for the earphone.
Build Quality: Based on choice of materials, assembly quality, physical design, and overall feel. Also includes any observations on the durability of the earphones while in my care.
Isolation: Amount of reduction in ambient noise provided by the IEM. All IEMs isolate external noise by virtue of sealed ear coupling, some more than others. The most isolating IEMs are capable of providing is upwards of 30db of attenuation, an 8-fold reduction in ambient noise volume (enough to reduce the volume of a vacuum cleaner to a whisper).
Microphonics: Susceptibility to cable noise, a common malady affecting in-ear earphones. See here for more info. Mitigating factors such as the inclusion of a shirt clip or cable cinch and the ease of wearing the IEMs over-the-ear are taken into account.
Comfort: How comfortable the earphone is over long stretches of time. Typically tip- and ear-dependent, but general trends still apply.

  1. Hoping you can help.
I am looking for a pair of IEM’s to compliment my current setup. I prefer a neutral sound and I recently started using a pair of over the ear ATH-M40X’s that I really like. Even though they are tuned flat the bass is still very apparent and at the right natural level for my ear and musical taste. (Classic Rock, Folk, 60’s and 70’s rock music)
I have a pair of single armature Sony XBA-C10i which have nice sound but it’s not near as full as I get with with the larger ATH-M40X.

For under $100 what is my best option to try to replicate the smooth sound I am getting from the ATH-M40X’s. I know its not possible but what comes close?

I was considering the HifiMan RE-400’s but not sure if I should go with a more V sharp or a warm and smooth to try to get closer to what a larger over the ear sound offers

Thanks. Love the site and all the reviews

  2. Silly question but where do I find the adjusted sound quality rating from your hallowed IEM reviews?
Also, how much sound quality do I miss by getting the much cheaper VSD3s instead of the GR07? I read someone said the highs sound kinda dull compared to MA750 🙁

  3. Thinking I might give a triple hybrid a shot, but I’m having a terrible time deciding between the T-Peos Altone200 and the Dunu DN-1000. I’ve read every review I can find so I’m pretty aware of the pros and cons of each but still can’t decide. I know it’s a tough question but if you could only have one, which one would you go with?

  4. No perfect answer to that – if there was such a product it would be extremely popular.

SD-3 is quite a lot bassier and not really any clearer than the RE-400/RE-600. I would say it’s too bass-heavy if anything compared to the HiFiMan sets. If you want to go in that direction, you already get a little more extension/depth than the RE-400 with the less expensive SD-2 and it’s a lot closer in signature to the HiFiMan sets. You can see a comparison between it and the RE-400 in the SD-2 review: https://theheadphonelist.com/headphone_review/inear-stagediver-2-sd-2-review/. For more clarity than that you would have to risk a brighter, potentially harsher sound signature – for example with the DUNU DN-2000, which also has plenty of deep bass. It just isn’t as refined overall as an RE-600 or SD-2.

  5. Yes, the KC06s on Amazon are fine. It’s the really popular sets that you have to worry about being counterfeited. Plus, the $54.99 ones found here: http://amzn.to/1zkDoL6 are sold by mp4nation.net, who are an authorized reseller. You can also buy them from mp4nation’s site but if you’re in the US it’s more expensive: http://www.mp4nation.net/ostry-kc06-in-ear-earphone-free-fedex-2-day-to-select-destination/?acc=35f4a8d465e6e1edc05f3d8ab658c551

  6. Thank you for this site- super useful and well thought out. One of my favorite places online.
I’ve been enjoying the RE 400 and 600s (Thanks to you) for awhile and am looking to upgrade a few things around the 600.00 mark if possible, and hoping you can help.
If I could combine the best of both the HiFiMans, add a little more LOWER sub bass impact, clarity throughout at especially at higher volumes and perhaps a more durable cable entry – well that would be awesome!
Would that be the Stage Driver 3? OR???

  7. Really appreciate your help ljokerl.

Is Amazon the best/safest place to buy the Ostry KC06 or is that one of the models where there might be counterfeit concerns and advisable to use a site I might not otherwise know about (such as when I looked into the Pistons)?

Also, would sending a small donation via the site reach you to say thanks or do you have an alternate preferred method?

  8. It’s not about there not being any products that excel across the board – there are. However, absolute sound quality simply doesn’t matter as much as finding the right sound signature. There’s plenty of examples of people preferring $20 earphones to $300 ones that – by all measures – perform better. This is an example of the higher-end product having the wrong sound signature for the purpose, which is something I try to avoid when making recommendations.

You definitely can try the JVCs or Pistons but their v-shaped sound is a big change from the Monoprice, so if you like the 8320 it’s a real question whether you will enjoy the JVCs as much. Maybe your preferences are flexible enough that you will, but it is equally likely that you will find the bass excessive and the midrange overly withdrawn.

  9. Thank you.

Your review had a sound rating of around 8.3-8.6 for the Ostry KC06. That would be your recommendation over something like those two JVC models, with the higher sound ratings, overall or mostly if one wanted to emphasize hearing dialogue for movies?

If I had to guess, I don’t really have a priority on the type of sound (or don’t know if I do yet). I was sort of hoping for an overall quality upgrade in general if looking to buy a new IEM and used the best sound quality rating for the best price in that ~$50 tier (though hoping the cheaper Monoprice or Xiaomi were all close enough in quality that spending more might not be warranted).

Not really one in that group that excels across the board in sound and more that one has to choose a model that emphasizes one part of the audio spectrum versus another depending on source? Is that important in that some other models will de-emphasize midrange to such extent making them not recommended for that usage even with such high sound ratings?

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

  10. Depends on what you want from your earphones – the ones you’re considering all have different sound profiles but the one thing they have in common is that compared to the Monoprice 8320 they all have a more v-shaped sound (more emphasis on the bass and treble relative to the midrange).

If your priority is movies – hearing dialogue and such – at which the monoprice really excels due to its strong midrange, I would consider a more mid-focused earphone such as the Ostry KC06: https://theheadphonelist.com/brief-impressions-vsonic-vsd3s-ostry-kc06-havi-b3-pro/

  11. As an upgrade coming from Monoprice 8320 and being used for non-portable use at home for mostly movies/TV via Blu-ray, cable and streaming but also some music listening (Rock/Pop/Oldies), would the Xiaomi Piston 2 be a worthwhile step up or would it take moving into a tier comprised of SteelSeries Flux In-Ear, JVC HA-FXD80 and JVC HA-FXT90?

And which of the later 3 would be your recommendation there if so (or something else entirely around that price range)?

    Thank you.

  12. Hmm… couple of good ways you can go. You can get similar performance with a slightly warmer sound from a TDK BA200, if you can find one, or a slightly brighter sound with the VSonic VC1000. You can even go for an Etymotic HF5 for slightly less impactful but more neutral sound. These are all smaller than the UE900 so hopefully they won’t cause any fit issues.

  13. Thanks Joker, currently looking for a sub $201 set, I’ve really enjoyed the sound signature of the UE 900 but had to part with them due to fit. Any recommendations for a more affordable set with similar sound?

  14. I have a T10i. The build quality is astonishingly good and it’s just a pleasure to see something so well-crafted. However, its sound is very bass-heavy and really not something I look for in a $200+ earphone. The MA750 was already quite powerful at the low end but the T10i is on another level altogether. Really surprised at the way it’s tuned – not really sure what to think about it so far.

  15. No, sorry. I have one but it’s uncomfortable after about 45 minutes so not going to review it. Don’t think I could give a fair evaluation of the sound.

  16. Really hoping you get your hands on the RHA T10i. If they can live up to being the new flagship I would love to see what you score the sound quality.

  17. I am looking for earphones in the 100-150 dollars range…Looking for good clarity…good bass and good noise isolation…which would you recommend?

  18. Unfortunately I only have the Brainwavz S1, which is quite bassy (much more so than the R3). The most bass-heavy earphone I’ve heard this year is the JVC HA-FR301: http://av.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL029379&pathId=211&page=1 . I am sure it has the impact you’re looking for, though of course that low end comes with some sacrifices in the way of clarity (the bass is quite dominant) and treble smoothness (it’s not very smooth). It’s my recommendation for head-shaking bass, though.

  19. Hello, sir.
I’m currently enjoying the clarity of Brainwavs S5 but there’s just not quite enough bass for me. Unfortunately, I’m doing most of my listening through an ipod. what would you recommend for the clarity of the Brainwavz but with more bass excitement? My last try was Grain Audio, I’ve also tried Brainwavs R3’s. No bueno. What do you think I’m looking for? Thanks a lot.

  20. From what I know those are all pretty reliable – I’d probably pick the Popular because it has the sturdiest cable and the clearest sound, but it’s up to you. Unfortunately it won’t sound nearly as spacious as the VSD1S, but without comparing them directly chances are you won’t be bothered by it.

  21. Hey, Joker! I’m a big fan of the list and was referred to it by an audiophile friend (before which I had no real discerning ideas about what I wanted my earphones to sound like). So following the buyer’s guide you’d put up, I decided to go with VSonic VSD1S and got it in March. Needless to say, it was totally worth the price and I was literally enjoying old music in completely new ways. Unfortunately, the left side of the earphones developed a snag (possibly due to shock) and they no longer function. So now I’m a bit weary of trying to get something that can’t withstand the occasional yanking now and then. I understand that I probably didn’t treat them the best either, but figured it would be able to withstand at least this much (my previous pair were Panasonic though can’t remember the model but lasted me 4 years). So right now my options are limited to those slightly sturdier than the VSD1S (and of course with a lower or same budget = $40-50). I was trading off between Soundmagic E10, T-PEOS Popular, and the Xiaomi Piston 2. I mostly just use it for listening to music on the laptop and iPod. Let me know what you think! Really appreciate the work you do 🙂

  22. Hi Joker!

Where are the Sony IEMs (especially the H1 and H3)? Really need to see them in this list, thanks!

  23. Yes, the tonal character of the MOE is not unlike the HD668B, just a little less smooth. Would probably skip it if you want to avoid edgy earphones, though. The FXT90 has some of the same problems but its enhanced bass helps, making the sound less treble-focused on the whole. It’s more on the warm side, though, as there’s a mid-bass hump. You can also consider the JVC FXD80 – also has a cool tonal character and superb clarity, but lacks some of the upper mid/lower treble boost of the SS01. The VSD1S is also a good option, though more neutral than the FXD80/SS01 (but not as warm as FXT90).

  24. Btw what i would like to avoid this time is the “edginess” on the treble side (im not sure how to call it, but it’s that grating feeling, i dont think it’s sibilance though). It’s not that im sensitive to treble, i actually enjoyed the treble on other iems such as dn-1000, soundmagic e30, re-400, etc, even if i eq it up a little bit.

  25. So apparently my mh1c is ok, i just had to dry it up under the sun and it’s alive and kicking again! So i dont think ill upgrade on the warm signature for now, but if i would in the future, i’d pick the eph-100. My xiaomi pistons 2.0 stopped working tho, i just unplugged it from my tablet working fine, the next minute i connected it to my phone, and it’s stopped working. I dunno what happened.

Anyway, i gotta replace that with another bang for the buck from the v-shaped category. Here are my choices

    Moe ss01
    Vsonic vsd1s
    Jvc fxt90

I’m really curious on what their advantages over the other. I’m attracted to the “cool tonality” and superb clarity of the ss01 (is it somewhat like superlux 668b?).

Which one has great sub bass? How about best clarity?
    Thanks a lot again joker

  26. How about the new TTPOD T1S with mic? Getting that for $39 the JVC FXT90 for $38. Will anyone who has heard both help me out here?

  27. Take a couple of days to allow them to dry fully before using them again, maybe using the rice method? I’ve never heard of earphones getting drowned in alcohol before. If that doesn’t help, there’s probably not much you can do.

The EPH-100 would be a good option if you can find a non-counterfeit one in your price range. It’s warm and has deep bass, and should be a good match for the MH1C. The sound is a little thicker and more full-bodied, but not in a bad way. Just don’t expect much if a clarity upgrade from the MH1C, which already does very well in that regard for an enhanced-bass earphone.

The GR07 is a lot less bassy and a little clearer, but it’s just not an MH1C-type sound signature. The FXT90 is good but again it’s more of a Piston signature with a mid-bass hump and more of a v-shape to it. The mids are not overshadowed by the bass like they are on the Piston, but otherwise it’s not so different.

  28. Hi Joker! My beloved MH1C’s left ear just got wet by alcohol. Now the volume is reduced to about half and the bass is now almost completely missing. Do you think there’s a remedy to it? Its only been 3 months since i bought it (thanks to your recommendation)

Anyway, looking for a replacement/upgrade, something with enhanced BASS and great CLARITY and around $60-$100. I still have my Pistons 2.0 which I like at first but ended up preferring the sound of MH1C. I had a chance to audition DN-1000 and I loved it (thunderous bass with excellent clarity), i just can’t afford it. So, I’m looking at:

-Yamaha EPH-100 (Sounds like an upgrade but what would you say are its weaknesses compared to MH1C?)
-Vsonic GR07 BE (I’m NOT treble sensitive at all but i’m afraid the reported sibilance would be too much for me)
-JVC FXT90 (this is interesting. Which is more neutral, this one or eph-100?)

I listen mostly to contemporary pop, urban, edm and some jazz. Not so much rock and classical

Thanks boss! I strongly rely on your recommendations
    Sorry for the long post

  29. *FIRST POST*
    Hi Joker
I am looking for new IEMs.. I mainly listen to hiphop and EDM on my galaxy s4.. I wont pay more then $140,-
I care alot about lower frequencies and want my bass to be prominent.. I want the mids and highs detailed and clear and I want them to have a good soundstage.. overall im searching for IEMs for in the bus and at school.. so i want some isolation and no leaking of sound so others will hear my music.. I want to experience something great when I listen to the music I love..
what kind of IEMs do you recommend?

    *NEW QUESTION*
After my first post you recommended me the Yamaha EPH-100 coz I listen to EDM and hiphop alot and for the things im searching for in my new IEMs..
As a second option you said the FXD80s and RHA-MA750 were great to..
I can see the FXD80s are alot cheaper then the Yamahas and RHA.. is the difference in sound that big?
How are the FXT90 compared to any of these..I can see they also are under the $100 ..
    Last question:)
I’ve never bought something from amazon ( I Live in the Netherlands)
    Are these suppliers any good?

    THX!

  30. I would say the HF5 has better quality on the whole. The Reference is a little peaky and the A83 is also not very flat, though also not as sibilant as a the Reference.

The A63 is going to sound muffled and overly mid-bassy compared to the HF5 – I doubt you’ll want to go back to it after the Etymotics.

  31. Also, I’d prefer a BA for this sound signature vs. a dynamic driver because I’m also undecided on whether to purchase a hybrid or just an armature-based IEM for an eventual upgrade.

  32. Thanks for the quick response! Based on reading your reviews and replies to others, I had a feeling you were going to recommend the HF5.

If it’s worth the extra $40 over my price range (the HF5 is currently $120 on Amazon), I may hold off on the A63 until after I purchase the HF5. Before making a more expensive purchase, I’m basically trying to determine whether I want something more analytical or more musical, how bright or warm the sound signature should be, and how prominent I want the mids and treble. I’ve also had bassier IEMs than the ones I’m considering now; so, I have a good idea of where I want the low end to be on a more expensive purchase.

How does the prominence and detail of the treble on the HF5 compare with that of the Fidue A83 and the Aclair Reference?

  33. Does it have to be a BA? Most cheap ones don’t have great treble – most roll off up top. The UE600 is the best I’ve tried in that price range but it can’t be called bright compared to a lot of higher-end earphones. From a signature standpoint, the VSonic VC02 sounds more like what you’re after, but it uses a (tiny) dynamic driver. Ditto on the Etymotic MC5.

That or you can go for the king of value in balanced BA earphones – the Etymotic HF5. Should run you ~$100.

  34. Hi joker. I currently own the Havi B3 Pro I which is considered to be a balanced iem among head-fiers. In preparation of hopefully making the right decision on a considerably more expensive iem, I am also planning on purchasing the Fidue A63 to have a more mid-centric sound with smoother treble. I am also in the market for an analytical, armature-based iem that has a cooler tone with a brighter treble and clear focus on the midrange and treble detail. What do you recommend that can be had for under $80 preferably?

Two of the more expensive iems that I am considering purchasing are the Alclair Reference and the Fidue A83. Ideally, finding an armature iem that has treble brightness in the range of these two would be great.

  35. Not a night and day difference but both are more balanced and refined than the VSD1S. You can also get a GR07 Classic for ~$99, which is said to be the same as the original GR07 mkI. VSonic themselves say the VSD1S is only about 85% as good as the GR07, which I can agree with.

  36. Hey ljokerl! I found out about the VSD1S due to your list in Head-fi and I totally love them. I got them for around 38 USD. However, I am looking for a step-up IEM from the VSD1S. My budget is max 100 USD. I listen to a diverse set of music so I really prefer balanced/neutral sounding IEMs. Right now, I’m eyeing either the Fidelio S1 or the HiFiMan RE-400 as they fit my budget. Are these two significant step-ups from the VSD1S? Thank you!

  37. Any chance you can add the VSonic VSD1/VSD1S to the chart? I noticed there GR07 are listed, and some sites claim the VSD1/VSD1S are supposed to be 80% of the sound quality of the GR07, but that can’t be true. Personally, I find my VSD1S to be better than the WooDuo 2 IEMs.
