Rating Breakdown
All ratings are scaled to how the particular IEM peforms compared to the best set I’ve heard to date in a particular category.

Accessories: Depends on both quantity and quality of the accessories, as well as on how well-suited they are for the earphone.
Build Quality: Based on choice of materials, assembly quality, physical design, and overall feel. Also includes any observations on the durability of the earphones while in my care.
Isolation: Amount of reduction in ambient noise provided by the IEM. All IEMs isolate external noise by virtue of sealed ear coupling, some more than others. The most isolating IEMs are capable of providing is upwards of 30db of attenuation, an 8-fold reduction in ambient noise volume (enough to reduce the volume of a vacuum cleaner to a whisper).
Microphonics: Susceptibility to cable noise, a common malady affecting in-ear earphones. See here for more info. Mitigating factors such as the inclusion of a shirt clip or cable cinch and the ease of wearing the IEMs over-the-ear are taken into account.
Comfort: How comfortable the earphone is over long stretches of time. Typically tip- and ear-dependent, but general trends still apply.

  1. What is the best custom iem for 300-$500 i am more looking into the 200-$300 maybe if i am lucky i can spare 100 or so budget basically a straight upgrade to my dunu dn 1000 and the sound sig i prefer is above and the music i listen to ^ but i will add more detail because this is a huge purchase so i add more detail so i wont ruin my purchase. Basically neutral i want the cleanest and the most clarity for my vocal has to be top notch i prefer it over everything in my EDM and other music i think i really like some air because it feels like there some separation for instrument . I really enjoy the Dunu dn 1k sub bass so maybe something with good sub bass. Good soundstage. I really also enjoy separation in my iems so something with good separation. For the bass not so overwhelming but good quality bass. I still have my re 400 the bass is ok but maybe something little or more then that tab bit if you know what i mean. Detailed will be nice also with nice Imaging. Sound isolation is important also because i travel alot. Car plane etc
    iems i looked. Any recommandation

  2. debating on either getting a gr07 Bass edition or the EPH 100 i prefer sound sig is netural very clean vocals good sounstage i listen to mainly monstercat type of music with some Pop Kpop and top 100

  3. I wouldn’t recommend the Sony MH1C, Fidue A63, or even the E10 for what you want (E10 might be okay, but not perfect). Not sure what the M4 sounds like – I skipped over it and only have the M3 and M5.

The VSD3S is very good, being like a slightly flatter VSD1S (so, falling somewhere between VC01 and VSD1S). It seems like this would be a safe choice, seeing as you liked both of those.

The Popular is also one I like quite a lot for this sort of thing but I couldn’t justify buying it over the VSD3S unless you 1) prefer its “bullet” form factor and cable-down fit, 2) are getting the Popular for much less $$ than the VSonic and are very concerned with value per dollar, or 3) are EXTREMELY sensitive to sibilance, in which case I do not recommend buying any VSonic earphones. However, as you’ve already tried the VSD1S, (3) doesn’t seem to be a problem and the other two are a non-issue since it’s on your list.

  4. hi,

i have read all the reviews of yours..absolutely wonderful and inspiring..as far my memory goes u suggested me to buy vsonic vc02 as an analytical substitute to my previous hifiman re0..but alas vc02 is not available now…..considering my liking which is more towards analytical and neutral there are very few choices left for me sitting back in india where the audiophile iem scene wears a sorry figure.so i intended to somehow look for alternatives.i narrowed my liking to an iem which provides a good quality/quantity bass(punchy and tight),very good clarity, instrument separation, slightly recessed mids, good treble extension-crisp but not sibilant.i am not too much concerned with the soundstage.i am using knowledge zenith-ed9 for casual listening but not quite pleased with that either.i enjoyed vc02(which i borrowed) and vsd1s.so now my choices are down to the following.

    1.tpeos-popular

    2.vsonic vsd3s

    3.sonic mh1c

    4.fidue a63

    5.soundmagic e10

    6.brainwavz m4

thnx for ur patient reading and replying…btw u dint tell me about the dap that i asked for….thnx always for ur help…..DR sohail nauhid.

  5. No, I don’t think the W20 sounds better than the RE-400 on the whole. They have their strengths and weaknesses, for example I prefer the treble of the RE-400 but the soundstage of the Westones. The W20 is a lot more durable (I understand that the headset version of the RE-400 is maybe not as durable as the regular stereo version) and more comfortable. Comfort could go the other way for someone who prefers to wear their earphones cable-down or just prefers more conventional bullet-shaped earphones, but for me Westone ergonomics are awesome.

As for headphones, you have two ways to go to avoid those issues. You could go over-ear with velour pads, which typically breathe better. Or you can go small on-ear, which just doesn’t invoke as much sweat. Example: Koss PortaPro or Sennheiser PX100-II.

  6. The other question I had for you was, which headphones would you recommend for someone who possesses a rather large head AND finds that most headphones make my ears get real hot, real quick… help?! Is open back headphones the secret?

  7. Thanks for your suggestions. I noticed the HifiMan RE 400 are high on your list and you describe them as having quite a neutral sound with little microphonics and they do come with 3 button control. They are about $300 cheaper than the Westone W20 in Sydney so I guess what Im asking is, is the Westone W20 $300 better than the Hifiman which by your review seem pretty awesome (and cheap!)?

  8. Cheers, very glad you’re enjoying them! I’ll get my hands on the Youth Edition soon, should make for a great Buyer’s Guide addition at <$10!

  9. Hi!

    Huge thanks for your job!

Just bought Xiaomi Piston Youth Edition (same as Xiaomi Piston 3, i hope so:)). I really liked their sounding after my last JVC HA-FR201. The sound is cleaner! Bass not so blurred, but also quite powerful! Especially when paired with my smartphone NOKIA Lumia 920. With EQ, you can get incredibly deep bass! However mid and high frequencies sound better, cleaner, and do not hurt ears at high volume!
On a PC with built-in soundcard, I could not achieve the same deep bass 🙁 Headphones react poorly to the changes in the EQ 🙁 It’s a pity that my ASUS Xonar DX has broken… it would be interesting to test with this soundcard.

Thank you so much for helping me to save a lot of money and get high quality sound!

hope you understand what I wrote =))

  10. Sounds like an Ultimate Ears 900 or Westone W2 / W20. Balanced sound, very low (or none at all) microphonics, modern design with replaceable (MMCX) cables. UE900 is a little brighter, Westones are a little darker, but both are great for an accurate/balanced sound. I tend to prefer the UE sound and Westone form factor and construction.

One of the Shures may work, too – I’m only familiar with the pricier SE535 but the SE425 and SE315 are said to be balanced-sounding as well. Unfortunately unlike UE and Westone units, Shure doesn’t include the 3-button cable in the box – it has to be purchased separately.

  11. Hey Joker,

Bought a pair of Degauss Lab Dual Drivers (one step below the NOIR). While the sound quality was pretty sweet, the flat cable is woefully noisy. Even wrapping around my ear didnt kill the terrible cable noise. Total deal breaker. Also one earphone just stopped working so it hasn’t been a happy time for me with these IEMs.

So I’m back in the market! I need a 3 button iphone compatible IEM, flat and accurate sound and *no cable noise*. would like high quality sound and build after my last experience. Hit me with a recommendation bro! Happy to spend a few hundred if need be 😉 big ups and thanks!

  12. We don’t do our own freq. response or other measurements at this point – it’s a plan for the future if the site continues to grow and we can afford to pay for the equipment…

As for a more subjective reading, we do plan to add some way of gauging sound signature at a glance for one of the upcoming updates. Not sure what it’ll look like yet, but I agree that it would make the table more useful as there are more and more earphones added.

  13. Wonder if you can put some frequency response graph on the left side? Should be helping people who are looking for more bass, less bass, a bit more mids, etc. Cheers!

  14. Thanks for the prompt response! I’ll go ahead and order the MA750 which I just noticed also has great looks so that’s a nice bonus!

  15. All good options, really. For a wide variety I’d say the MA750 is a nice versatile option. Bass is plentiful but not overblown and the overall sound is the most balanced of the bunch. I’d probably recommend it over the GR07 as well since that’s more of an enthusiast “flat and accurate” earphone.

  16. Hi Joker, I just stumbled across your website in my search for a decent pair of IEMs and I’m blown away by the amount of work and effort that must have gone into making this huge review list and I sincerely thank you for it. I’m looking for a pair of IEMs with an all-round sound but also decent and deep bass. My taste in music is quite varied; I usually listen to electronic/techno beats, rock and metal but also tend to enjoy orchestral opera, OSTs and classical music every now and then.

After reading your buyer’s guide, I’m torn between RHA MA750, Yamaha EPH-100 and Sennheiser Momentum In-Ear (I was also going to say VSonic GR07 but amazon.co.uk doesn’t have them). Which IEMs should I get in your opinion? I’m looking to pay up to £80 (~$130) but can go a bit higher if they are really worth it.

  17. the flc looks pretty complicated with all those nozzle. Have you heard the im70? and if i am not mistaken the dn 1000 is triple driver like the dn 2000?

  18. They’re pretty close to the DN-2000. Better in most ways – more balanced, spacious, refined, etc – but really it’s just more of the same things that make the DN-1000 good.

The DN-2000J sounds like the DN-2000 to me. It’s certainly more similar to the DN-2000 than it is to the DN-1000 or FLC8.

  19. Is the dunu 2000 and the flc tech day and night difference over the dn 1000 and have you heard the dn 2000j

  20. DUNU DN-2000 or FLC Tech FLC 8. Both can be more accurate and balanced than the DN-1000 without giving up too much bass power or depth. Either way, you are getting a fidelity and soundstage upgrade in exchange for some of the DN-1000’s bass enhancement.

  21. Yes, as long as you don’t mind it being more balanced/accurate compared to the more colored VSD3S.

  22. 250-$350 for edm i really liked the dn 1000 so a upgrade to the dn 1000 ever way and Very very good vocals to

  23. Not sure about the VSD5 yet (it reminds me of the other VSonics but I haven’t decided whether it’s closer to the VSD3, GR07, or something else yet) but the GR07 is always a good choice.

  24. VSD5 also came out recently, would the GR07 be a better choice? I like to listen to: Hip Hop, Rap, Rock, JRock

  25. This list and your understanding and insights is really, really remarkable I must say. Quite honestly, I find this site has provided me with more information in 30 minutes than all the bull-shit talking I have endured in the past 30 years talking to retail staff.

  26. I would personally get the Etymotic Research HF5. Should be around $120-150. Won’t find better clarity anywhere near that price point and the balance is very good as well. 2nd choice – Final Audio Heaven II – a little rough around the edges in sound compared to the Etys, but still very clear and also less expensive, metal, better-looking, and so on.

And if you want Shure-level build quality – Aurisonics Rockets – but then you’re getting back up to that $200-250 price range again.

  27. Hi and Hello,

I used to own a pair of Shure 425 headphones —- and lost them. What a real drag 🙂 I really enjoyed their neutral sound stage (so I believe) and were very impressed with the clarity of sound that it produced. I also was very keen on their build quality (well, having lost kind of defeats the object, doesn’t? :-))

Now a replacement is required, but this time at a lower price point. Just do not feel like spending another 300 $ on a pair right now. What is all of yours recommendation?

    thanks for your help. Thom

  28. Hi, I currently own Vsonic Vsd3s. I’m looking for an upgrade in the ~50-100 range. What should I get? I really like the Vsd3s, but my right ear piece’s sound gets cut off sometimes randomly

  29. More emphasis on deep bass, less on mid-bass compared to the Consonance, but otherwise they would work (MG7 especially, but it’s discontinued). In the past some people coming from “conventionally” bassy earphones like the Consonance have been disappointed with the lack of enhanced mid-bass of the Wooduo2.

  30. Perhaps the Yamaha EPH-100 – while it’s a little more on the warm and smooth side, I really like the depth of its bass.

Something a little closer to the Consonance overall, which has some treble emphasis in addition to its bass boost – the DUNU DN-1000. It has less bass, though.

  31. Hi Joker.
I learned that KZ DT3 is the same Fischer Audio Consonance. I like this bass, deep, capacity… very like.
Please, advise more serious earphones with the same style of Bass.

  32. Thanks…I will continue with my hunt…I dont have much of options where I live….Imagine I had to get a Sony Hi-Res player imported…Head Phones I have options…but in IEM’s I dont have options…Not sure why…But thats the way market is here…Carrying Headphones is tad difficult….

  33. Which one would recommend for a dedicated player Sony NWZ-A17 out of the following…Usually listen top FLAC’s and occasionally AAC’s at 256 kbps

    1. ATH IM70
    2. Beyerdynamic DX160ie
    3. Sony XBA-H1

Any other IEM in the same price range from your side?
